Peter ASHBY 1751 - 1833, born in Frederick County, Virginia in 1751 was the son of Thomas ASHBY, Jr. 1717 - 1784, and the grandson of Captain Thomas ASHBY 1680-1752, who was the grandson of George ASHBY 1581 - 1653 and Elizabeth Bennett 1606 - 1681 of Quenby Hall, near Hungerton, Leicestershire County, England.

In 1776 in Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia) Peter married Winnefred TIMMONS 1760 - 1838, daughter of Henry TIMMONS, of Broadmeadow, Birmingham, England, and Hannah HUBBARD GREEN. Both Peter and Thomas, Jr. as well as most of their brothers served in the Virginia Militia during the Revolutionary War. After 1784 Peter and his brothers, Jesse, George, Henry and Stephen with their families left Hampshire County, Virginia and came to Kentucky. They came through western Maryland and Ohio to "Limestone" now (Maysville, Ky.,) built rafts went down the Ohio River to the "Falls of Louisville" and overland to Mercer County, Ky. During this trip Stephen and his family were captured by Indians. Stephen and one son escaped but it was many years before his wife and other son were set free. Peter was a blacksmith and farmer on land he owned east of Salt River near Mc Afee Station.

Sometime after 1795 Peter settled on land he received as a land grant for service in the Revolutionary War about one and one half miles west of what is now Onton, Ky. in Webster Co, but then Christian Co., later Henderson Co., and still later Hopkins Co. Peter and Winnefred had eight children:
